What the RT is
Prathom 1 children in schools across Thailand, public and private, take the RT near the end of the school year. The words come from the basic word list for Prathom 1–3. The RT is a diagnostic check: the results show each child’s reading strengths and gaps, so the school can plan reading support.
When it happens
Once a year, in February. In school year 2567 the test day was 11 February 2025, and in school year 2568 it was 11 February 2026. Children first do the reading-for-meaning paper (45 minutes), then read aloud to a teacher one at a time (about 10 minutes each). Results come out in late March.
The two parts
| Part | What the child does | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Reading aloud การอ่านออกเสียง | Reads 20 words aloud (1 point each) | 20 |
| Reads a short text of 10 sentences, about 60–70 words (up to 3 points per sentence) | 30 | |
| Reading for meaning การอ่านรู้เรื่อง | Matches 10 words to their meaning (1 point each) | 10 |
| Writes a sentence about each of 5 pictures (up to 2 points each) | 10 | |
| Answers 10 multiple-choice questions about sentences (2 points each) | 20 | |
| Answers 5 multiple-choice questions about a short text (2 points each) | 10 | |
| Total | 100 | |
The words include ones with and without tone marks, with final consonants, with consonant clusters and with leading consonants (อักษรนำ). The reading-for-meaning part also checks the meaning of common signs and symbols.
The four levels
| Level | Score |
|---|---|
| ดีมาก · very good | 75% and above |
| ดี · good | 50% to below 75% |
| พอใช้ · fair | 25% to below 50% |
| ปรับปรุง · needs improvement | below 25% |
Each part gets a level, and so does the total. In school year 2567, the national averages were 80.28% for reading aloud, 77.16% for reading for meaning and 78.72% overall, all in the ดีมาก band.

And in Prathom 3?
In Prathom 3, children take the NT (National Test), which checks Thai language, including reading, and maths. Teacher Daisy’s graded Thai passages for Prathom 2–6 help you see your child’s reading level between these tests.
Help your child at home
- Spend five minutes a day on Thai spelling-out (แจกลูก, สะกดคำ): a consonant with a vowel, then add a final consonant and a tone mark.
- Read a short page aloud together every day, and let your child re-read it until it sounds smooth.
- After reading, ask who, what, where and why, and let your child tell the story back in their own words.
- Let your child write one sentence a day about a picture or about their day.
- Talk about the signs you see together: toilets, no smoking, exits and shop names.
- Try the free RT-style check every 6–8 weeks to see progress.
Questions parents and teachers ask
What is the RT test in Thailand?
The RT (Reading Test) is the national reading assessment for Prathom 1, set by the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC, สพฐ.). It checks reading aloud and reading for meaning, 50 points each, 100 points in total.
What score is ดีมาก in the RT?
75% or more. ดี (good) is 50% to below 75%, พอใช้ (fair) is 25% to below 50%, and ปรับปรุง (needs improvement) is below 25%. Each part and the total get a level.
When is the RT given?
Once a year in February, near the end of Prathom 1. In school year 2568 the test day was 11 February 2026. Reading for meaning is a 45-minute paper; reading aloud takes about 10 minutes per child, one to one.
How can I help my child prepare?
No cramming is needed. Daily spelling-out practice, reading short texts aloud together, talking about stories and writing one sentence a day build exactly the skills the RT checks.
Is Teacher Daisy’s check the official RT?
No. It follows the RT parts, points and levels with original words, sentences and stories, so you can practise and track progress at home. Only your child’s school gives the official RT result.
This page explains the RT as published by Thailand’s Office of the Basic Education Commission in plain words. Teacher Daisy’s free checks follow the same structure with original passages and questions; they are informal home checks, not official RT results. Always ask your child’s school for the official result.
