When it happens in 2026–2027
Under the SY 2026–2027 school calendar, schools give the beginning-of-year assessments (Phil-IRI, CRLA and the Rapid Mathematics Assessment) in the first week of classes in June 2026, according to division memos. A post-test follows near the end of the school year.
The four stages
- Group Screening Test (GST): a silent reading test for the whole class. Grades 4–6 answer 20 items in about 30 minutes; a score of 14–20 passes. Grades 7–10 answer 40 items; 28–40 passes.
- Graded passages: learners who do not pass read passages aloud, one to one. Those with lower scores start two or three grade levels below their grade. After an Independent or Instructional result they move up a passage; after a Frustration result they move down.
- Remediation: reading instruction at the learner’s instructional level.
- Post-test: graded passages again, about two months before the school year ends.
Levels and cut-offs
| Level | Word reading | Comprehension |
|---|---|---|
| Independent: reads alone with ease | 97–100% | 80–100% |
| Instructional: right level for lessons with support | 90–96% | 59–79% |
| Frustration: too hard for now | 89% or below | 58% or below |
Word reading = (words in the passage − miscues) ÷ words × 100. Miscues are mispronunciation, omission, substitution, insertion, repetition, transposition and reversal; self-corrections do not count. When the two percentages give different levels, the lower one is the learner’s level.
Help your child at home
- Read together for 15 minutes a day at the child’s instructional level, not their grade level.
- Re-read the same short text two or three times to build fluency.
- Ask “who, what, where, why” questions after reading, and let your child retell the story.
- Try the free Phil-IRI-style check below every 8–10 weeks to see progress.
Questions parents and teachers ask
What is the Phil-IRI pass mark in 2026?
In the Group Screening Test for Grades 4–6, a score of 14 to 20 out of 20 passes. For Grades 7–10 the test has 40 items and 28 to 40 passes. Learners who pass do not need individual oral reading.
What does “Frustration level” mean?
The passage was too hard: word reading was 89% or below, or comprehension was 58% or below. It does not mean the child cannot read. It shows the level to step back to for teaching.
Is the Phil-IRI in English or Filipino?
Both. Schools assess reading in English and in Filipino, and the levels can be different in each language.
Can I use Teacher Daisy’s check instead of the school’s Phil-IRI?
No. It follows the same steps and cut-offs with original passages so you can practise and track progress at home, but only the school gives the official Phil-IRI result.
This page explains DepEd’s published assessment process in plain words. Teacher Daisy’s free checks follow the same structure with original passages and questions; they are informal home checks, not official DepEd results. Always ask your child’s school for the official result.
