What the child does
- Letter sounds: the child says the sounds of a set of letters.
- Depending on that result, the child then does easier or harder tasks: rhyming words, reading single words, or reading sentences.
- Later in the year: listening comprehension, reading a short passage aloud, and comprehension questions.
Languages from SY 2025–2026
With Mother Tongue removed as a subject (RA 12027, DepEd Order No. 20, s. 2025), Grades 1 and 2 are assessed in Filipino, and Grade 3 in Filipino and English. Schools that teach in a local language may use it where a validated version exists.
The five reading profiles
| Profile | What it means |
|---|---|
| Low Emerging | Still learning letter sounds, blending and decoding. |
| High Emerging | Has last year’s basic skills, but not yet automatic or fluent. |
| Developing | Can decode, but needs a lot of guidance. |
| Transitioning | Reads fluently but finds inference and deeper comprehension hard. |
| At Grade Level | Reads with understanding and ease for the grade. |
Learners in the Low and High Emerging groups get priority for reading tutoring under the ARAL Program (RA 12028). DepEd’s score cut-offs for each profile are in the official teacher’s guide; ask the school for your child’s profile.
Help your child at home
- Practise letter sounds every day with short, playful games.
- Blend sounds into words (s-a-t, sat), then read short sentences together.
- Read aloud to your child daily and talk about the story.
- Use the free Reading Starter Pack and sight-word flashcards in Downloads.
Questions parents and teachers ask
Who takes the CRLA in 2026?
Learners in Grades 1 to 3, one to one with their teacher, at the beginning, middle and end of the school year.
Is CRLA still used under MATATAG?
Yes. Division memos for SY 2026–2027 list the CRLA among the beginning-of-year assessments in the first week of classes in June 2026.
What happens if my child is “Low Emerging”?
Your child will usually get extra reading support, including tutoring under the ARAL Program. Daily letter-sound and blending practice at home helps a lot.
How does Teacher Daisy’s CRLA-style check score?
It uses the branching steps and the bands published for CRLA in 2021–2023 (Full, Moderate and Light refresher, and Grade ready). It is an informal home check, not the official CRLA.
This page explains DepEd’s published assessment process in plain words. Teacher Daisy’s free checks follow the same structure with original passages and questions; they are informal home checks, not official DepEd results. Always ask your child’s school for the official result.
