How to use the LAS at home
- Pick the week. Ask the teacher which letter or skill the class is on, or follow the quarter and week.
- Read the “Alamin” box together and say the letter sounds, not the letter names (say /m/, not “em”).
- Do one or two activities a day, 10–15 minutes. Read the instructions aloud. In Quarter 1 your child mostly listens, says and circles; from Quarter 2 your child reads more alone.
- Check with the answer key (Susi sa Pagwawasto) at the bottom of page 2. Cut it off before you give the sheet to your child.
- Praise effort, not speed. If a sheet is too hard, go back a week or two; if it is easy, move on.
Older children who still find reading hard (for example a CRLA profile of Low or High Emerging in Grades 2–3) can use these sheets too. See the CRLA explained and the free reading check.
What is in each weekly sheet
- Lines for Pangalan, Petsa and Baitang/Seksyon (name, date, grade and section)
- Kasanayan: the week’s skill in simple Filipino, with its curriculum code
- Alamin: what we learn this week, with examples
- 3–4 activities (Gawain): sound and picture matching, beginning and ending sounds, syllable blending (ba + ta = bata), word and sentence reading, short original stories with questions, sequencing, tracing and writing
- Tandaan: the rule to remember
- Susi sa Pagwawasto: the answer key, on a strip you can cut off
Pictures are large, and the reading text uses a font made for beginning readers, with the simple letter shapes children learn to write (a, g).
What is Reading and Literacy in MATATAG?
The MATATAG curriculum (DepEd Order No. 10, s. 2024) gives Grade 1 a learning area called Reading and Literacy. It builds the foundations of reading: hearing rhymes, syllables and sounds; letters and their sounds; blending sounds into words; sight words and vocabulary; how books and print work; understanding stories and informational texts; and writing words and sentences. From Grade 2, children continue with separate Filipino and English subjects.
The 2023 curriculum guide was written for the learner’s first language. Since SY 2025–2026, under RA 12027 and DepEd Order No. 20, s. 2025, Filipino and English are the main languages of instruction from Kindergarten to Grade 3, with regional languages such as Cebuano as support. Most Grade 1 classes therefore learn to read in Filipino, so these sheets are in Filipino.
| Quarter and theme | What the eight weeks cover |
|---|---|
| Quarter 1 Ako at ang Aking Pamilya | Rhymes and syllables; first sounds (a, e, i, o, u); parts of a book and signs around us; letters M, S, A, I, O; first words (mama, aso, mais); listening to stories; family words |
| Quarter 2 Ang Aking Paaralan | Letters B, E, U, T, K, L, Y, N, G, NG; blending syllables into words; changing one sound (bata → bato); naming and describing words; sight words (ang, ay, si, sa, may); short stories; school words |
| Quarter 3 Ang Aking Pamayanan | Letters P, R, D, H, W; r or l; signs in the community; naming and describing words; reading sentences with the right speed and expression (. ? !); cause and effect; problem and solution |
| Quarter 4 Ang Aking Kapaligiran | Borrowed letters C, F, J, Ñ, Q, V, X, Z and the 28-letter Filipino alphabet; ending sounds; action words; caring for the environment; sequencing; informational text; feelings, traits and predicting the ending; review |
Using them in SY 2026–2027 (three terms)
From SY 2026–2027, DepEd schools follow three terms instead of four quarters (DepEd Order No. 9, s. 2026). The Grade 1 Reading and Literacy skills stay the same; DepEd’s three-term budget of work only groups them differently (oneself in Term 1, family in Term 2, community in Term 3). This is how the 32 weeks fit the terms:
| Term | Months | Sheets to use |
|---|---|---|
| Term 1 | June to September | Quarter 1, Weeks 1–8, and Quarter 2, Weeks 1–3 |
| Term 2 | September to December | Quarter 2, Weeks 4–8, and Quarter 3, Weeks 1–6 |
| Term 3 | January to April | Quarter 3, Weeks 7–8, and Quarter 4, Weeks 1–8 |
This is Teacher Daisy’s suggestion, not an official DepEd table. The letter or skill your child’s class is on matters more than the week number.
Questions parents and teachers ask
Are these the official DepEd LAS?
No. They are original activity sheets by Teacher Daisy that follow the learning competencies of the DepEd MATATAG Reading and Literacy curriculum guide for Grade 1. Your school’s own LAS or modules may differ, so follow your child’s teacher.
What language are the sheets in?
Filipino. Since SY 2025–2026, Filipino and English are the main languages of instruction from Kindergarten to Grade 3 (RA 12027 and DepEd Order No. 20, s. 2025), so most Grade 1 classes learn to read in Filipino. Each sheet has a one-line note for parents in English.
Where can I find “LAS Q4 W5 Reading and Literacy”?
Every week has its own PDF, named by grade, quarter and week. Quarter 4 Week 5 is Grade-1-Quarter-4-Week-5-Reading-and-Literacy-LAS.pdf. Each quarter is also one PDF with all eight weeks.
My child’s school uses terms, not quarters. Which sheet should we use?
From SY 2026–2027, schools follow three terms (DepEd Order No. 9, s. 2026), but the Grade 1 skills are the same. Ask the teacher which letter or skill the class is on and pick that week, or use the guide on this page: Term 1 is about Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 Weeks 1–3, Term 2 is about Quarter 2 Weeks 4–8 and Quarter 3 Weeks 1–6, and Term 3 is about Quarter 3 Weeks 7–8 and Quarter 4.
Which letters are taught first?
m, s, a, i, o, then b, e, u, t, k, l, y, n, g, ng, then p, r, d, h, w, and in Quarter 4 the borrowed letters c, f, j, ñ, q, v, x, z. This is the Marungko-style order many Filipino reading programmes use, so children can read real words (mama, aso, mais) after only a few letters.
Can I print them for my class?
Yes. They are free to print and photocopy for home or class. Please do not sell them or upload the files elsewhere; share the link to this page instead.
These are original activity sheets and stories by Teacher Daisy Jane, written to the learning competencies of the DepEd MATATAG Reading and Literacy curriculum guide (Grade 1, 2023) and DepEd’s three-term budget of work (2026). They are not official DepEd materials.
